Bourke Aboriginal Health Service (BAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service that provides primary health care services initiated and operated by the local Aboriginal community to deliver holistic, comprehensive, and culturally appropriate health care to the community. BAHS provides a wide range of clinical services and support programs with a focus on Chronic Disease, Primary Health Care, such as: Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Dental, Mental Health, and Drug and Alcohol related issues.

About the Opportunity

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service now has three exciting opportunities for full-time Nurses to join their team in Bourke, NSW.

The roles include Registered Nurse (Clinical), Registered Nurse (Chronic) and Registered Nurse/Midwife.

Reporting to the Clinical/Practice Manager, these roles will see you responsible for providing health care to the Bourke community, ensuring quality and providing mentorship, and performing general hands-on nursing duties. You will also ensure the effective communication of the organisation's vision and strategies. 

Registered Nurse (Clinical), starting immediately, duties include:

  • Consulting records and meeting the needs of the patients;
  • Utilising Communicare to help deliver quality care to the community;
  • Providing patient care for the maintenance and prevention of chronic disease;
  • Pre-Consultation management of the patient; and
  • General clinical duties.

Registered Nurse (Chronic), starting January 2020, duties include:

  • Working closely with the New Directions team on early detection of chronic disease;
  • Provide care to those with chronic disease such as heart disease or diabetes;
  • Helping the patient to manage their ongoing care; 
  • Using your knowledge of the development of chronic disease to educate the community;
  • Developing patient care plans and health checks in partnership with the GP;
  • Delivering health promotion geared to the patients’ and communities' needs in improving their health literacy; and
  • Providing integrated person-centered primary health care to clients who are either at risk of developing; or have been diagnosed with a chronic condition.

Registered Nurse/Midwife, starting January 2020, duties include:

  • Providing education and support to mothers within the community;
  • Advocating for families in the Bourke Community;
  • Providing care for the patients up until the point of birth;
  • Advocating for the improvement of anti-natal and post-natal care for mothers and babies;
  • Supporting the patient and child once they return to Bourke; and
  • Providing primary healthcare services when necessary.

Please note: The closest birthing centre is located in Dubbo, the midwife will not be required to participate in active delivery.

The organisation is also open to applications from candidates seeking short-term appointments.

About You

The successful candidates in these roles will need to be a Registered Nurse with relevant nursing qualifications. You will have at least twelve months experience in a similar role.

Individual experience needed:

  • If you are applying for the Registered Nurse/Midwife role, child health qualifications or experience are desirable.
  • Experience in chronic disease management is a must for the Registered Nurse (Chronic) role. An immunisation certificate and experience in venipuncture would be desirable.
  • The Registered Nurse (Clinical) role is very versatile so it is important you have broad clinical experience to be successful in this position.

Due to the nature of the role, you must have an understanding of Aboriginal history, culture and aspirations, along with knowledge of community controlled health organisations and how they operate. You must be able to work collaboratively with people from a range of cultural and social backgrounds. 

Experience working with Communicare is desirable for all three positions. Candidates will be required to hold a Working With Children Check, a current First Aid Certificate, an unendorsed Driving License and to undertake a National Police Check. 

You will have the ability to communicate and work effectively in a team.
